The temporal lobe of the brain is responsible for visual perception. That is, it is responsible for identifying the visual features of an object. When it's damaged, those things that we identify by their visual features are beyond us.

We divide the world in two categories of living and nonliving objects. We define nonliving objects by their functional features (we know what a pencil is by the way we USE it)and living objects by their visual features, the way they look like.

Patients with temporal lobe damage don't know what living things are. They don't have a concept of them. When asked what an "ostrich" is, they'll say something like "unusual"
